MenuClimate ResearchCanadian InitiativesThe Canadian Institute for Climate Studies manages the Canadian Climate Research Network, which was founded by the Meteorlogical Service of Canada of Environment Canada "to improve the prediction of the rate, magnitude and regional characteristics of climate, climate variability and climate change in Canada in order to assess the extent and effects of global warming."The Canadian Climate Impacts and Scenarios Project is a project with the goal of "providing climate scenario information and scenario construction advice to impacts researchers in Canada". The Canadian Climate Impacts and Adaptation Research Network facilitates research and training, promotes stakeholder involvement, and provides continuity in the effort to develop scholarship and a shared understanding of present-day and future climate impacts, vulnerabilities, risks, and adaptation. As part of the national C-CIARN effort, the British Columbia Node will provide these services to researchers and stakeholders interested in climate impacts, vulnerabilities, risks, and adaptation in British Columbia. A major Canadian project by Environment Canada is the Canada Climate Study which "looks at the social, biological, and economic impacts of climate change and potential adaptive responses for Canada." Another major Canadian undertaking is the Canadian Global Change Program, which is also based at the University of Victoria under the direction of Dr. Gordon Smith. BIOCAP is a group based at Queens University with the goal of "coordinating the development of biologically-based strategies and tools for reducing and mitigating GHG emissions and adapting Canadian forest and agricultural systems to the elevated CO2 and climate change that will define our future. The Canadian Climate Program Board (CCPB) and its committees have developed an overall program that articulates the way in which climate issues in Canada will be addressed called the Canadian Climate Program. It provides an overall umbrella for a range of climate activities in Canada including their current goals and objectives. For more information on CCPB, please contact our Executive Director, Fred Herfst , who is a member of the board. International Climate ResearchInternationally, the coordinating program for climate research is the World Climate Research Programme (WCRP). in order to develop the fundamental scientific understanding of the climate system and climate processes that is needed to determine to which extent climate can be predicted and the extent of human influence on climate. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change is the international body looking specifically at climate change, modelling, and recommendations to policy-makers. Climate ChangeThe Canadian Climate Impacts and Scenarios Project provides scenario data, maps, and background information derived from models contributing to IPCC, particularly the Canadian Center for Climate Modelling and Analysis global coupled model CGCM1. The Climate Scenarios Primer is a non-technical introduction to climate scenarios for business, industry and the public as well as researchers investigating the impacts of climate change. The Climate Severity Index is an aggregate indication of personal discomfort, safety and mobility arising from the extremes of weather and climate that we experience over a period of years. The Canadian Climate Impacts and Adaptation Research Network - British Columbia Node facilitates research and training, promotes stakeholder involvement, and provides continuity in the effort to develop scholarship and a shared understanding of present-day and future climate impacts, vulnerabilities, risks, and adaptation. As part of the national C-CIARN effort, the British Columbia node will provide these services to researchers and stakeholders interested in climate impacts, vulnerabilities, risks, and adaptation in British Columbia.
